What Is GIFT City? Understanding India’s Gateway to Global Finance.

  September 17,2026

What Is GIFT City?

GIFT City, short for Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, is being developed as an international financial and technology hub in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Its International Financial Services Centre (IFSC) provides a framework for conducting international financial activities from India.

The broader objective is to create a globally competitive financial ecosystem and bring more India-linked international financial activity within the country.

Unlike a conventional business district, GIFT City combines financial services, technology, capital markets and other specialised activities within an internationally oriented ecosystem.

Understanding the GIFT City IFSC

A key part of GIFT City is the International Financial Services Centre (IFSC).

The IFSC framework enables activities such as cross-border banking, international investments, insurance and reinsurance, fund management and other financial services. These activities are regulated by the International Financial Services Centres Authority (IFSCA), which was established in 2020 as the unified regulator for financial products, services and institutions operating in India's IFSCs. The presentation describes GIFT City's structure through two broad areas: the Domestic Tariff Area (DTA) and the IFSC zone. The IFSC provides the international financial framework that gives GIFT City its distinctive role in connecting Indian and global markets.

Why Was GIFT City Created?

One of the central objectives behind GIFT City is to develop an ecosystem that can support international financial activities from India.

Historically, some India-linked international financial transactions and services were conducted through established overseas financial centres. GIFT IFSC is intended to provide an India-based platform for such international financial activities and strengthen India's participation in global finance.

This makes GIFT City part of India's broader effort to build financial infrastructure with stronger international connectivity.

GIFT City and the Global Financial Ecosystem

The ecosystem at GIFT City extends across several financial sectors. These include banking, fund management, capital markets, insurance, fintech and metals and commodities. (IFSC Authority)

Another important development is the India International Bullion Exchange (IIBX), located at GIFT IFSC. IIBX is India's first international bullion exchange and operates under IFSCA regulation, providing infrastructure for bullion trading and related activities. (IIBX)

The presentation also highlights the emergence of foreign universities and the broader development of finance and technology talent around GIFT City.

What About Tax Benefits?

GIFT IFSC has specific tax and regulatory provisions designed to support its international financial ecosystem. The presentation highlights benefits including a 10-year tax holiday within a 15-year period, along with certain provisions relating to GST, MAT, securities transactions and stamp duty.

However, these benefits are not automatically applicable to every investor or transaction. Eligibility, structure, applicable legislation and regulatory conditions need to be assessed before relying on any tax-related benefit.

What Does GIFT City Mean for Investors?

GIFT City is primarily an international financial ecosystem, not a single investment product. Its development may create opportunities across banking, funds, capital markets, insurance, fintech and other financial services.

For investors, understanding the underlying product, its risks, taxation, eligibility and regulatory framework is more important than simply associating an investment with GIFT City.

Conclusion

GIFT City represents India's long-term effort to strengthen its connection with international financial markets. Its IFSC framework, unified regulatory structure and expanding financial ecosystem make it an important development in India's financial infrastructure.

For investors, however, GIFT City should be understood as an ecosystem and financial centre—not a guarantee of returns or investment performance.
